2025 Habitat Management Symposium

December 3, 2025 @ 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM
COME SEE US! DEC 3 9 AM - 4 PM Cumberland River Compact staff will be attending this event - say hi!

Join us for two days of learning, connection, and collaboration in conservation at the 2025 Habitat Management Symposium hosted by Kentucky State University. The Habitat Management Symposium is a two-day gathering dedicated to advancing the science and practice of habitat restoration and natural areas management across the region. This year’s program will bring together professionals, researchers, students, and land managers for an engaging exchange of knowledge and experience. Participants can expect a diverse lineup of implementation-focused presentations, interactive discussions, and real-world case studies that highlight innovative approaches to restoring and managing ecosystems. With a strong focus on collaboration and practical outcomes, the symposium provides a space for building partnerships, sharing lessons learned, networking, and identifying new strategies to enhance habitat resilience. Keynote speakers from the Southeastern Grasslands Institute will bring valuable insights into regional conservation priorities and restoration success stories.

The Compact’s Working Lands Division Manager, Kaela Walton-Sather, will be in attendance and on December 3rd will present on the organization’s Mine Lands Reforestation Program. An initiative launched in 2023 to restore landscapes in the Cumberland River basin degraded by coal mining. Her presentation will detail the foundational steps in building the program, lessons learned in overcoming challenges, and a framework for other organizations interested in reforesting post-mining lands. Using the Forestry Reclamation Approach (FRA), the Compact has restored over 120 acres to date, planting more than 77,000 native trees and shrubs that improve soil health, enhance water quality, and create vital wildlife habitat. Attendees will gain practical insight into the planning, partnerships, and community engagement needed to scale a successful reforestation effort that supports both ecological recovery and local economies.

Lunch will be provided both days, with a light breakfast and coffee included. There will also be a light dinner served at the networking social event. If you have any questions or need more information about the symposium, please reach out to Kasia at Kasia.Bradley@kysu.edu or Anna Claire at Anna.Rogers@kysu.edu.

Cost: $50 2-day registration, $30 1-day registration, student registration, and pricing available.
