Why Hellbender?
The eastern hellbender is the Cumberland River Compact’s mascot! This unique Cumberland River basin dweller is the largest salamander in North America. Because it breathes through its skin (a fascinating process called subcutaneous respiration), it thrives only in pristine, well-oxygenated waters. The hellbender is known as an indicator species, meaning scientists can learn about pollution and other types of environmental damage by monitoring their population.
According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, only 59% of hellbender populations remain, and they are in decline. These archaic amphibians call the Cumberland River basin home, and through initiatives including stream restoration, reforestation, and education, the Compact is fighting to protect them. Attending Hellbender on the River supports the quality of their habitat in an ever-changing environment.
