Meharry Medical College Depave – Open to the Public

Join the Compact at Meharry Medical College on Tuesday, December 2nd, at 9:00 AM to learn about the Compact’s depave initiative, and watch in real-time as leadership from Meharry and the Compact break ground on a new depave project! 

The ceremonial groundbreaking for the new depave project, featuring leadership from Meharry and the Cumberland River Compact, will begin at 9:15 AM. From 9:00 to 10:30 AM, Compact staff will host “Donuts and Depave,” where you can ask questions about the depave project, find informational materials about depaving to take home, and enjoy complimentary donuts from a local business.  If you’re a business owner or community leader interested in depaving your own property, this is a great opportunity to learn more; if you just want to celebrate with us and show your support, we’d love to see you.  

This is a drop-in event, and you are welcome to arrive at any time.  Attendance is free and no registration is required.

Depave at Meharry Medical College: The Compact will transform an underused paved area on Meharry’s campus into a green space that supports environmental health and community well-being. The project will remove 2,050 square feet of asphalt and add 85 native trees (and an assortment of native wildflowers and grasses) to the campus, improving stormwater management and strengthening connections between environmental and human health.

This event also marks the 150th anniversary of the college and will be followed by a volunteer tree-planting initiative led by Meharry students. Thanks to the leadership of Meharry Medical College for their commitment to sustainability and community impact, which has made this project possible.
