Terra Firma: Building Your Farm Business on Solid Ground
This annual course is for beginning farmers who sell their products directly within their communities. Farmers will meet weekly in early 2025 to hear from instructors and peers, on growing their farming business and management skills. This course stems from the Cumberland River Compact’s commitment to helping the next generation of agricultural water stewards succeed – not only in their conservation initiatives, but also in their business goals.
The course covers:
- finances and record keeping
- project management
- whole farm planning
- labor management
- grants, loans, and financial services.
Notable instructors from across the region and the country will teach the course, giving farmers access to an incredible wealth of information from experts in their field.
Terra Firma is free thanks to a grant from Sustainable Agriculture Research & Education (SARE). The course will be hosted by the Cumberland River Compact and held every Tuesday evening, January 14 through February 11, 2025 at the Nashville Farmers Market.
Up to twenty-five farmers will be selected for the 2025 class. The Compact is offering a limited number of $250-500 stipends to farmers who have financial need.
