After water is used in homes and businesses, it heads down the drain to a wastewater treatment plant, where it is cleaned before it re-enters a local body of water. A crucial part of the treatment process for wastewater utilizes tiny microorganisms that consume the nutrient ‘waste’ in the wastewater. In this lesson, students design a basic model of the wastewater process, explore how this technology reflects natural processes, and take a closer look at the microorganisms found in wastewater and the environment.
