Teacher Retreat 2026: Water in Tennessee

Join the Cumberland River Compact for the annual Teacher Retreat! During this two-day retreat, you will participate in immersive learning about water resources in Tennessee and plan for ways to integrate this content into your curriculum.
You’ll also learn how to shift your science instruction by using “storyline units” that are anchored by a phenomenon and include sensemaking through modeling. You will receive a certificate for 9 professional learning hours.
Activities will include:
- Outdoor exploration time at a local waterway
- Using biological, physical, and chemical tests to determine water quality
- A tour of a local water or wastewater treatment facility
- Community building with fellow science teachers from across Tennessee
- Optional opportunity to kayak at the end of the retreat!
Eligibility:
The Teacher Retreat is open to 6th – 12th grade science teachers from across Tennessee.
Application:
Applications for the Teacher Retreat will be reviewed by the Cumberland River Compact to confirm eligibility. Applications will be reviewed and accepted as they are received. Space is limited to 20 teachers, and the application will close after that number is met– so get yours in early!
Costs:
Thanks to the generous support of Fortitude Re, the Cumberland River Compact’s Teacher Retreat is free for Tennessee science teachers! Accepted teachers who do not live nearby may receive free lodging in Cookeville on the evening of September 12. The optional kayaking opportunity will be a separate charge, estimated at $70 per person.
