(De)Paving the Way: the Future of Stormwater Solutions

Addressing stormwater runoff in an increasingly paved world requires creative approaches to maximize watershed health. The Cumberland River Compact’s depave initiative converts impervious surfaces, such as parking lots, into thriving green spaces that reduce runoff, increase infiltration, and support green infrastructure in urban areas.
Depaving recovers inaccessible land so it can be used for planting rain gardens, native landscaping, and increasing urban tree canopy. Compact-led depave projects improve stormwater runoff from individual sites and also support watershed-level improvements.
In this presentation, you will hear from Jason Sprouls and Gray Perry with the Cumberland River Compact about the depave initiative. They will share case studies from the 10 depave projects the Compact has completed across Nashville, ranging in size from 100 to over 35,000 square feet.
Additionally, they will explain the planning and execution of the Compact’s ongoing effort to depave North Nashville to show how depaving can improve resilience across a watershed. This session will address how depaving can complement traditional stormwater systems while advancing regulatory compliance and resilience within urban and suburban watersheds.
This presentation is part of the Cumberland River Compact’s professional education training series supported by the stormwater departments of Gallatin, Hendersonville, Goodlettsville, and Sumner County. This series promotes best practices and innovative approaches in stormwater. The presentation is ideal for contractors, developers, stormwater professionals, and engineers. About the Speakers:
Jason Sprouls is the Urban Waters Division Manager at the Cumberland River Compact, where he manages programs that address urban water quality, including depave, Root Nashville, and conservation landscaping. He has a master’s degree in forestry with an urban forestry specialization from Virginia Tech, is an ISA board-certified arborist, and is ISA Tree Risk Assessment-qualified (TRAQ).
Gray Perry is the Watershed Science and Restoration Program Manager at the Cumberland River Compact. He currently manages restoration projects to improve the health of streams, rivers, and wetlands throughout the Cumberland River Basin. Gray has an MS in geosciences from Middle Tennessee State University and a BS in geology and environmental studies from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
