Rain Garden Planting & Mulching

April 25 @ 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Join the Cumberland River Compact for a volunteer-powered Rain Garden planting event in Clarksville! The 600-square-foot rain garden will collect and clean rainwater before it runs into the West Fork Red River, a 100-mile-long tributary of the Cumberland River. Sediment, nutrients, and habitat alteration impair the West Fork Red River. Warm, unfiltered runoff puts a heavy burden on our streams and leads to flooding, erosion, and habitat loss. A properly constructed rain garden can capture and filter more than 40,000 gallons of stormwater each year and recharge our groundwater! Rain Gardens also provide extra benefits that we can all enjoy, including:

  • Attracting beneficial insects that will help eliminate those pesky ones
  • Attracting pollinators and song birds
  • Reducing standing water thanks to their highly absorbent design qualities which will, in turn, reduce mosquito breeding

Since 2009, The Compact has worked with a network of trusted engineers, landscape architects, and nurseries to assist in planting over 500 rain gardens! We are excited to be partnering with Clarksville Parks & Recreation on this project. By volunteering to participate in this planting event, you play an active role in improving the health of a river that flows through a beautiful Clarksville park! As Middle Tennessee continues to grow, so does the need to clean and treat our water. Rain Gardens are one of many tactics used to treat stormwater runoff and just so happen to work extremely well in a residential setting.

This Rain Garden planting event involves planting native grasses and flowers and mulching. Bring a water bottle and wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty. The Compact will provide all the tools and supplies for the project. Registration is required on VolunteerHub. We look forward to seeing you there!
