Meharry Medical College STEAM Student Tree Planting

March 27 @ 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Students participating in Meharry Medical College’s Black Girls in STEAM programming are invited to join the Cumberland River Compact for a special on-campus tree planting.

Urban trees provide major benefits in cities like Nashville. They help reduce heat, improve air quality, absorb stormwater, protect local waterways, and create healthier, more welcoming spaces. During this hands-on planting, students will not only learn how to plant trees, but also learn more about their impact on the environment, water quality, and public health.

The event will begin with a demonstration of tree planting techniques and a short talk about the benefits of trees from Cumberland River Compact staff. Students will then spread out in small groups to plant native shade trees all around Meharry Medical College’s Learning Resources Center (LRC). Students will help adjust pre-dug holes, plant trees, backfill soil, and mulch around the base of each tree.

By the end of the event, students will have helped create lasting green infrastructure on Meharry’s historic campus that will provide shade, beauty, and environmental benefits for years to come.
